From the author: The purpose of this study was to examine the evidence to determine if there are gender differences in suicidal ideation of adolescents. This study examined the main effect of risk factors from 5 domains and protective factors from 1 domain in relation to suicidal ideation by gender and identified the most important predictors of suicidal ideation for males (N = 654) and females (N = 658). This study was a cross-sectional survey, and data were collected through self-report questionnaires. In the univariate analysis, especially, risk factors from behavioral variables and psychosocial-environmental variables appeared to be gender skewed. For males, all behavioral variables were predictive of suicidal ideation. For the females, unlike the males, Wang-tta or victim of bullying behavior and sexual orientation as behavioral ! variables were predictive of suicidal ideation. For males, parental divorce and parental alcohol abuse as psychosocial-environmental variables were predictive of suicidal ideation. For the females, again unlike for the males, all the psychosocial-environmental variables were not predictive of suicidal ideation. The most important predictors of suicidal ideation for males as a result of the multivariate analysis were history of suicidal attempt, depression, hostility, smoking, parental alcohol abuse, communication with friends, and self esteem. The most important predictors of suicidal ideation for females as a result of the multivariate analysis were depression, hostility, sexual orientation, and self-esteem. These results would indicate that an effective suicide screening and prevention program Jbr adolescents should consider gender differences.

Distributed by Gale, a part of Cengage LearningDietary fructose has been suspected to contribute to development of metabolic syndrome, such as insulin resistance, hypertriglyceridemia, and hypertension. However, underlying mechanisms of the fructose effects are not well characterized. We investigated metabolic outcomes and hepatic expression of key regulatory genes upon fructose feeding under well defined conditions. Rats were fed 63% (w/w) glucose (G) or fructose (F) diet for 4 hours/day for 2 weeks, and were killed after feeding or 24-hour fasting. Liver glycogen was higher in the F-fed rats, indicating robust conversion of fructose to glyc! ogen through gluconeogenesis despite simultaneous induction of! genes f or de novo lipogenesis and increased liver triglycerides. Fructose feeding increased mRNA of previously unidentified genes involved in macronutrient metabolism including fructokinase, aldolase B, phosphofructokinase-1, fructose-1,6-bisphosphatase and carbohydrate response element binding protein (ChREBP). Activity of glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase, a key enzyme for ChREBP activation, remained elevated in both fed and fasted fructose groups. In the fasted liver, the fructose group showed lower non-esterified fatty acids, triglycerides and microsomal triglyceride transfer protein mRNA, suggesting low VLDL synthesis even though plasma VLDL triglycerides were higher. Next, we investigated the mechanism underlying the unique pattern of gene expression by dietary fructose. The hypothesis tested was that the gene induction by dietary fructose is mediated by simultaneous activation of three transcription factors: ChREBP, sterol regulatory element-binding protein-1 (SREBP-1) and F! orkhead box O1 (FoxO1). Again, rats were meal-fed (4h/d) either G or F diet. After 2 wks, animals were killed at the end of the last meal. Nuclear SREBP-1 was higher in F-fed rats than G-fed rats. Nuclear FoxO1 was also elevated with F, but did not reach significance (p=0.08). Surprisingly, no difference was observed in the amount of nuclear ChREBP between F- and G-fed rats. However, ChREBP binding activity was higher in F-fed animals. In conclusion, fructose feeding induced a broader range of genes than previously identified with simultaneous increase in glycogen and triglycerides in liver. SREBP-1 and ChREBP, and possibly FoxO1, likely mediate gene induction by dietary fructose. The study also suggests that further ChREBP activation occurs in the nucleus after nuclear translocation of ChREBP in F-fed rat.Includes: Reflections on Korean Cinema: An Introduction, Immortal 'Realism' in the Modern History of Korean Film Criticism, European Responses to Korean Movies: The Case ! of France, Korean Aesthetics in the Historical Movies of the 1! 960's as Seen in the Films of Shin Sang Ok, Reunifying Identities: A Reflection on Comtemporary Cinema in South Korea, On Korean Cinema: An Interview with Pierre Rissient

The Burning Plain

  • BURNING PLAIN, THE (DVD MOVIE)
Academy Award® winners Charlize Theron and Kim Basinger star in this romantic mystery about hope, redemption and second chances. Sylvia (Theron) is a woman on the edge whose cool, professional demeanor masks a deeply troubled, sexually charged storm within. When a stranger from Mexico confronts her with her mysterious past, she is launched into an emotional journey back to the defining moment of her life. Gina (Basinger) is a housewife trapped in a loveless marriage who finds solace and passion in an illicit affair. Though separated by time and great distances, these women find their lives linked by the forces of love and fate.A painful secret separates a mother and daughter in The Burning Plain, the feature directorial debut by the screenwriter of Babel, 21 Grams, and Amores Perros. The story moves fluidly in time: In the present, S! ylvia (Charlize Theron) seems to be leading a confident life as the manager of an expensive restaurant, but it’s a mask covering promiscuity, self-mutilation, and suicidal impulses. Many years earlier, a young girl named Mariana (Jennifer Lawrence, The Bill Engvall Show) tries to piece together what led her mother (Kim Basinger) into an extramarital affair...even as Mariana herself falls into a dangerous relationship with the son of her mother’s lover. These threads and more are interwoven into an increasingly potent knot. The Burning Plain has some obvious dialogue and a few off-key notes, but despite that is a striking first effort by Guillermo Arriaga. Theron has always been best in roles that draw on anger and pain, like her astonishing performance in Monster; she goes bland when called on to portray nobility and happiness, but give her inner demons and her remarkable beauty roils with hidden emotions. The rest of the supporting cast--including ! John Corbett and Robin Tunney in small roles--turn in strong w! ork. Lik e a boa constrictor, the movie slowly coils around you, then squeezes. --Bret Fetzer

Triangle

  • TESTED
The story follows a young woman as she's tortured by a mysterious figure who suspects her husband of stealing millions from a crime syndicate.Rising star Josh Duhamel (TV's Las Vegas) leads a group of young backpackers who find themselves stranded on a remote Brazilian beach; an exotic paradise, with warm sunshine, cool ocean breezes, and plenty of hot bodies. But, after a night of partying, the wayward turistas are drugged and robbed, and their dream vacation becomes a gruesome nightmare. Trapped and desperate, the vulnerable travelers are lured deep into the menacing jungle and beyond, where a dark and twisted fate too terrifying to imagine awaits. If not for Hostel, we'd never have been treated to the gory, horrific delights so lovingly captured with sadistic detail in Turistas. Together, these movies could be spawning a radical new Hollywood-pedigreed sub-genre of extr! eme horror. Like Hostel, Turistas concerns a group of American hardbodied kids on an exotic foreign vacation--this time in Brazil. After a suspense-filled opening sequence of a speeding bus careening off a dangerous mountain (it's also tinged with just the right kind of humor), the kids wander into the seeming paradise of a secluded beachfront resort where they think nothing of locals who lure them one by one to their gruesome and shocking deaths. Hey, they're here to party! These excruciatingly graphic scenes unfold in the lair of a madman doctor named Zamora, who harvests organs of the still-living as a way of exacting revenge on American turistas to "give back" to the locals they exploit with their capitalist dollars. One such scene has the donor undergoing surgery without the help of anesthesia wherein the lovely young "patient" has the chance to see her still thriving innards pulsing warmly on her well-formed chest to the tune of her own screams. This stu! ff is not for the faint of heart (or liver, or kidney, or lung! s, for t hat matter). But there is a fair amount of nicely staged tension, especially a "foot" chase scene in a water-filled cave that will give claustrophobics a whole new way to experience nightmares. The two most familiar faces are Melissa George and Josh Duhamel, from TV's Alias and Vegas respectively. Fans of this new world of extreme gross-out horror should be thankful that TV has plenty of cute young bodies waiting for their big screen break, no matter how many organs they have to donate to get there. --Ted FryDVD

Legend has it, if you climb the 28 stairs leading to the school dormitory and count each step aloud, a 29th step will appear and a spirit will grant you a wish. If your intentions are honorable, your wish can be a blessing of good fortune. But at this high school, where paranoia and jealousy reign supreme, malicious wishes are about to unleash an unspeakable evil. Be careful what you wish for; some wishes were never meant to be granted. The South ! Korean "Ghost School" trilogy comes to a close with Wishing Stairs, a typically creepy example of modern Asian horror. First-time director Yoon Jae-Yeon was fresh out of film school when she signed on for this commercial assignment, and her rookie status makes this a lesser entry in the "Asian Extreme" genre, following the trilogy's previous installments, Whispering Corridors and Memento Mori. Still, fine performances and attention to psychological detail make this an effectively eerie study of peer pressure, classroom cruelty, and blind ambition in a girls' art school, where three aspiring ballerinas make fateful wishes upon an enchanted staircase (or is it cursed?) near their school. According to legend, if you climb the 28 steps and count each step aloud, a 29th step will magically appear and a fox-spirit will grant your wish. Fierce competition, paranoia, and malicious intentions make these "wishing stairs" a recipe for disaster, when one girl commi! ts suicide and another wishes for her revival. At that point, ! Wishi ng Stairs employs standard-issue horror techniques that will be familiar to anyone who's seen Ju-On or the Japanese version of Dark Water (including the ghostly girl with long black hair). For patient viewers, the film's frightful climax comes not a moment too soon. A comprehensive "making of" documentary is included, including interview clips with primary cast and crew. --Jeff ShannonAs It Is in Heaven Poster (11 x 17 Inches - 28cm x 44cm) (2004) Swedish Style A reproduction poster print
